Present Yourself

Adulting can tend to be contiguous moments of moving from one thing to the next. These moments can take the form of moving from meeting to meeting, from work to your children's game, from job life to home life, from one household task to the next, then to budgeting and paying bills.

Many times these transitions can pile on and have us disoriented because, well, "everything has to get done by yesterday or the world will cease to exist"...or at least it can feel that way.

Fortunate for us, research has shown that taking micro breaks of about 10 minutes or less throughout your day can serve in boosting effectiveness throughout your day while decreasing the strain of piling on activities

Nevertheless, sometimes it can be very difficult to find as much as 10 minutes to yourself in a given day and all you have are a couple seconds or a minute. In this case, what you can do with the seconds or the minute is what I call "
present yourself." Instead of moving on to the next thing, take 20 seconds to a minute to breathe and situate yourself in the space you are in; feel the chair you're in, the ground on which you stand, the air and sounds that surround you.

Then do a quick internal check by asking yourself, "how am I feeling?" You do not necessarily need an answer, but giving your internal parts attention can help you be aware of what you need as you move on to the next thing. Finally, when you get to the next thing, take a breath and say to yourself, "I am here." Try this for a week and see what happens. YOU are welcome here!
